Description
HFNC (often referred to as high-flow) systems are broadly defined as systems that provide an oxygen-gas mixture at flows that meet or exceed a patient’s spontaneous inspiratory effort.
High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy is an oxygen supply system capable of delivering up to 100% humidified and heated oxygen at a high flow rate per minute.
Application
Acute hypoxic respiratory failure (ARF) was the first condition treated with HFNC in adults. The use of heated and humidified high flow nasal cannula (HFNC) has become increasingly popular in the treatment of patients with acute respiratory failure through all age groups.
Other applications of HFNC include the prevention of postextubation hypoxaemia, pre-oxygenation before sedation/anaesthesia and oxygenation during bronchoscopy.
