Description

HFNC (often referred to as high-flow) systems are broadly defined as systems that provide an oxygen-gas mixture at flows that meet or exceed a patient’s spontaneous inspiratory effort.

High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy is an oxygen supply system capable of delivering up to 100% humidified and heated oxygen at a high flow rate per minute.

HFNC is a promising novel oxygen delivery device, whose mechanisms of action offer some beneficial effects over conventional oxygen systems. It is considered to have a number of physiological effects: it improves oxygenation, dynamic lung compliance, homogeneity and end expiratory lung volume; it decreases anatomical dead space and generates a positive airway pressure that can reduce respiratory rate, the work of breathing, and enhance patient comfort.

Its use has been widely explored, particularly in ICUs and emergency departments (EDs)

HFNC also exerts its effect by providing some variable positive pressure. By providing variable positive pressure, use of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) increases functional residual capacity (FRC) by about 25% compared to use of traditional nasal cannula.
